Touch typing from zero: the home-row method that actually sticks

Skip the gimmicks. Learn finger placement, build muscle memory in short sessions, and stop looking at the keyboard for good.

Touch typing is one skill, not ten: keep eight fingers on the home row (A S D F J K L ;) and let each finger own its column. Thumbs handle space. Everything else is repetition.

Week one: placement only

Do not chase speed yet. Type slowly and return every finger to home row after each key. Ten minutes a day is enough, short sessions build cleaner muscle memory than one long session.

The backspace rule

Beginners retype whole words after a mistake. Do not. Hit backspace once, fix the single character, and continue. This trains error recovery, which is half of real-world typing speed.

When to move on

Move to timed tests when you can type a full minute without looking down. Your speed will feel slow at first, typically 25 to 35 WPM. That is normal. Speed arrives on its own once placement is automatic.
